Shipping Rate Increases (And What You Can Do About It)

Please note that the annual round of shipping rate increases is now upon us.

Specifically:

  1. FedEx will be increasing their rates by about 7% as from Monday, 5 January 2009.
  2. The US Postal Service will be increasing their rates, as from Sunday, 18 January 2009: Priority Mail will increase by 4%, Express Mail by 6% and International services by 9%.

(Although we don’t use them, UPS will also be increasing their rates at the same time as FedEx, and DHL will be ceasing all US domestic services as from Friday, 30 January 2009.)

Note that these are across-the-board increases (i.e. they are not just specific to us) - you will probably find similar shipping increases on other websites that you use.

What does this mean to our customers?

Well, we do have to pass on these increases, unfortunately, as they are not under our control.

So, what we would recommend you do is to order at least one Gold Value Pack now, so that you have the products on hand should you need them. This way, you can save some money by not having to pay the higher shipping prices that will come into effect very soon now.

Also, by ordering them now, you can have your package shipped via USPS Priority Mail (within the US), rather than using FedEx Overnight, which is all we use if your dog is sick, as anything else can be too slow and can cost your dog his life. By doing this, you will save at least $30 USD, and maybe as much as $50 USD!

Remember, although Parvo is present all year round, there is a definite “Parvo season” that starts in Spring and lasts for several months, so it’s much better to be prepared, should the worst happen.

You see, although there is some sort of stigma attached to dog owners, and especially breeders, who have dogs that become infected with Parvo, it is such an aggressive and easily-transmitted virus that you can do all of the right things, as some of our customers already do, and still get a Parvo outbreak.

We have a customer in Canada who has regular inspections by the local authorities, and who have praised her for how well and cleanly she keeps her kennels, and yet even her dogs had a Parvo infection.

The virus can live outdoors for many years - up to 20, according to some experts - and it can also survive frost, so a cold winter certainly won’t be enough to get rid of it.

Then, it only takes one bird or one insect to land in some infected feces on somebody else’s property, then land on yours, and suddenly, you’ve got Parvo, and you didn’t do anything wrong!

And finally, as we have said many times already, Parvo vaccinations are simply not as effective as they once were, with the 2c strain defeating most, if not all, vaccines that are on the market today. Please don’t assume that, just because your dog has been vaccinated and/or he’s an adult, that he won’t get Parvo, because we’re seeing many, many customers who are in just such a situation.

So, get your Gold Value Pack now, at current USPS Priority Mail rates, before you need one, and then you’ll have the peace of mind that comes from being as prepared as you can be.
