Case Study
Our puppy Mitsie (at five and a half months) got sick. She was vomiting and had diarrhea, getting worse by the hour.
We took her to the vet Thursday morning and upon examination, the doctor advised us our puppy was in shock and her kidneys were shutting down. Immediately, they put her on warmed towels and administered IV with meds.
By Friday night the doctor advised us she only had a 50/50 chance of survival: the vomiting and diarrhea had not stopped, and she could not even hold down water. Further, they advised us she may need a blood transfusion, plus special dietary care for a possible 7 to 10 more days, and still the 50/50 chance of survival. We requested X-rays before going home - we needed to know more. The X-rays revealed more: her stomach was twice its size and her intestinal tract was very inflated. She was really sick and weak.
Now, I was speechless. The clinic was also now closed and we had to go home and leave our precious puppy to go back into a little two-foot steel cage as she needed to be in isolation - I could not speak. I will never forget the look in her eyes as she knew I had to leave her. Tears were falling down my face as we left the clinic. When we got home I crawled into bed into the fetal position and began to try and digest all the information and possible further complications that could arise from this situation like coma, seizure etc. I had difficulty accepting all this and that our precious puppy could die.
Sometime later that Friday evening, I got up and the other me bolted forward. I was done feeling hopeless. I am not a traditionalist - I am a fighter. I sat myself in front of the computer ... determined to find something to save her, seeking direction.
I did a search on Parvo. Well, you can imagine the number of hits I got, but I persevered and finally filtered it down to a promising website. I felt satisfied I had found an answer so I asked my husband, Jim, to drop whatever he was doing and read everything at the website I had found.
It was late Friday night and a lot of reading material. The website said there was 24/7 phone support so Jim called. He actually was talking with a live person on the other end of the call, from Arizona, that was quite knowledgeable and experienced with Parvo! Mark was his name - totally dedicated to saving any dog's life he could.
Now we were on a mission of hope. We left the house to seek out the list of grocery items we needed to start an emergency herbal treatment. We got back home at 3 A.M.! We still needed a couple more ingredients which we bought at the Shoppers Drug Mart the next morning (Saturday) as soon as they opened.
We prepared the tea and took it to Mitsie at the clinic and gave her the first teaspoon of the herbal tea remedy at 10:45 a.m. She did not vomit. We were counting the minutes and gave her another dose 15 minutes later. She still held it down and appeared soothed by it. We advised the doctor we were taking Mitsie home and following an hourly treatment plan with phone support from Mark in Arizona. They were very kind and allowed us to take the IV machine home. We continued the hourly treatment plan, waiting delivery of the holistic products we had ordered from Mark.
She never did vomit again nor had diarrhea. She started to perk up. She did not have any bowel movement for four days from the time she arrived home. That definitely was a concern but then she finally had one and it was fine - no issue. Some puppies can die two hours after a bowel movement if they are too weak - so the whole ordeal was quite stressful.
Mitsie survived !!! We have now named her Precious Mitsie.

Lessons To Be Learned
Cheryl originally wrote this for the Natural Horse Network site, but kindly sent it to us too so that we could use it as one of our Case Studies.
- There are many symptoms of Parvo, including vomiting (which often starts as an almost-white mucus-like substance, but then turns to a yellow frothy vomit), diarrhea (usually foul-smelling and can be bloody), depression, dehydration, not eating, not drinking, lethargy / not playing, and fever, but these symptoms can come in any order and not all dogs will develop all of them.
However, you normally see lethargy first, which is why it's really important to get to know your dog so that you can detect changes in behaviour.
- Parvo does not usually cause such damage to the kidneys, although it can affect many organs of the body, including the heart. The virus mainly attacks the immune system and the intestines.
- Most vets seem to give customers' dogs a 50:50 chance of surviving Parvo, although we've heard of figures as low as 25% and, on rare occasions, as high as 85%.

(Sadly, there are no 100% guarantees with Parvo, and you should obviously distrust anybody who says there are, but 90% is a good deal better than 50%.)
- Speaking to other customers, blood tranfusions can cost around $200 USD, and most dogs will need more than one of these.
- Although Cheryl doesn't mention it in her Case Study, she told us when we spoke that her vet had quoted her about $3,000 (Canadian) for the recommended treatment. This is not unusual, and we've had customers in the US quoted costs as high as $12,000 USD for one dog (still with their 50% survival rate).

- Many vets will, not surprisingly, disagree with your decision to take your dog home, but home treatment has one big advantage in addition to the better survival rates and lower cost - it's much less stressful, for both the dog and for you. Your dog will be in a familiar environment, surrounded by people he knows cares for him, and you'll be with him 24 hours a day (which is what home treatment requires); at the vet's or animal hospital, this will often not be the case. Stress has been proven to increase recovery times, so this is actually a very important factor.
As for you, you won't constantly be worrying about how your dog is (and we've even had some customers take their dogs to their vet's and only find out one or two days after the event that their dog had died), and this too will be less stressful - Parvo often throws people into a panic at the best of times, so you definitely don't need any more unnecessary stress at this stage!
- As Cheryl says, to help your dog beat Parvo, you (and he) have to be a fighter. Home treatment does require you to know and understand quite a bit about this virus and how it works (but don't worry, as our extensive experience in dealing with hundreds of Parvo cases and our unique 24 x 7 phone support means you'll never be left alone, wondering what to do), and you can expect a few sleepless days and nights, as both the pre-treatment / emergency measures and the first two days of full dosage do require you to administer something to your sick dog every hour (around the clock).
- You will find other people selling these products both online and in retail stores, but information gleaned from many of our other customers has highlighted a few major issues.
There are obviously two benefits in buying these products locally, if you can find them - you'll get them quicker, and you'll save money on shipping (especially as we only use FedEx Overnight if your dog is sick, as anything else is often too slow.)
However, the downsides are that the people may not sell you the right number of the right products, they may not give you the correct dosage instructions, they probably won't offer you all of the emergency measures you'll need to keep your dog going until you can begin treatment, and they almost certainly won't offer you much in the way of support, and especially not 24 x 7 phone support and personal coaching.
- It is really crucial that you administer the emergency measures immediately, as these can help to sustain your dog for a few days until your products can arrive. These emergency measures serve two main purposes - they will counteract two of the main dangers of Parvo, namely dehydration and hypoglycemia, and they will also get your sick dog used to the idea of being given small amounts of fluids on a regular basis, which is great preparation for when your products arrive.

Many of our customers do find that the emergency measures can perk their dog up almost immediately, but don't be fooled into thinking that they will treat the Parvo - they are only stop-gap measures and you will need the products to help him recover from the virus.
- It is unusual for dogs to stop vomiting and having diarrhea so quickly, although it was obviously very welcome to Cheryl. Every case can be different, which is just one more reason why active participation in our free vPETS personal coaching program is so important - regular contact with us throughout the course of treatment allows us to make dosage adjustments as necessary.
- It is not unusual for dogs to go for a day or two without any bowel movements during the middle phase of Parvo. Don't forget, most dogs do not eat solid foods for anywhere from two to four days, as they are only able to take small amounts of liquid at a time. However, in Mitsie's case, four days is a little bit longer than normal, but as we said above, each case is different.
- As Cheryl says, some dogs are dying from Parvo, especially the latest 2c strain, in as little as six hours, which means you've barely time to react or take him to the vet's. If any of your dogs are already sick with Parvo, or are showing any of the typical symptoms (e.g. yellow vomit, foul-smelling diarrhea), then you need to use a FedEx Overnight service to guarantee your doggie the best possible chance of surviving this dreadful virus. Please do not select USPS Express Mail expecting it to be an overnight service, because in our experience, it rarely has been.
We really do not want to see any more of our customers' dogs dying because they tried to save money by selecting a slower shipping service!

Action Plan
